Can we discover superfoods by simply analyzing their chemical compositions?
After cross-analyzing adaptogenic and immunomodulatory superfoods we discovered that they all contain polysaccharides consisting of monosaccharides proven to be essential in cell-cell communication.
From this we can hypothesize that the adaptogenic and immunomodulatory properties of these superfoods is at least partly due to the presence of polysccharides consisting of these essential saccharides.
From this we can conclude that if a newly discovered plant has polysaccharides with these essential saccharides it will also possess adaptogenic and immunomodulatory properties. Extraction of these polysaccharides could prove to be beneficial for medicinal purposes.
A recent study demonstrates potential in this field:
A novel water-soluble polysaccharide was identified in the pupae of the melon fly. This polysaccharide which they names Dipterose comprises nine monosaccharides–D-glucose, D-mannose, D-galactose, D-ribose, L-rhamnose, L-fucose, D-glucuronic acid, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine. A recent study performed on mice showed that this polysaccharide activates the innate immune system in macrophages and may enhance the immune response to various pathogens. This is the first identification of an innate immune-activating polysaccharide from an animal.
By cross-analyzing the unique benefits of specific superfoods with the essential saccharides present in each we have been able to identify healing properties of a number of these essential saccharides.
Essential Saccharide for Brain Health:
N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (Neu5Ac) is found in substantial quantities in the brain and kidneys, and this has led to speculation that it may play an important role in brain development as well as kidney functions. This rare monosaccharide is found in Lion's Mane Mushroom, Marine Phytoplankton, Aloe Vera, Sea Cucumber and Colostrum. These superfoods have all shown to be effective in improving cognitive function supporting the idea that this monosaccharide plays an important role in brain development.
